GeoPlatform R16 Release Notes
Release 16 was promoted to production on 3 July 2019. The information on this page summarizes the new and significantly enhanced capabilities and features of this release. Release 16 has the usual tweaks and adjustments to improve the user experience, search performance, and Portfolio Management, as well as several significant new capabilities and features.
GeoPlatform Portal Experience (Portal & Theme Content 3.2)
Compared to the very significant updates to GeoPlatform Portal in the previous (R15) release, this release has relatively minor tweaks to improve usability and navigation. Changes made reflect comments received from users and stakeholders.
Identity Management and User Authentication
The rules for password creation have been relaxed to now require only 1 (instead of 2) of each type of character.
The rules for answering “security questions” (used to confirm a user’s identity before resetting their password) have also been relaxed so that: a) the answers are not case sensitive and b) only 1 question must be successfully answered.
Asset Details Page: New Actions
When a user clicks-through on an item listed in the Portfolio Search results, information of the the selected asset is displayed in a uniform way, regardless of the type of asset (Dataset, Service, Layer, Map, Gallery, etc). The Portfolio Asset Details page (a WordPress Plugin) unifies the presentation of key information in overview fashion, including usage links to related resources, views of usage statistics, and knowledge graphic classifiers. The Asset Details page also allows asset-specific actions to be taken.
The new Asset Details page have been updated with new action buttons: “Quick Map” preview, Download Source Metadata document, and Clone the object.
This new application allows raw Layers linked to a Service or Dataset Asset to be quickly viewed on a map and saved as a new Map Asset. Preview (“Quick”) Maps can be launched from the Asset Details Plugin and from the Object Editor.
Dynamic Digital Communities 3.1
The dynamic community experience continues to mature with enhancements to the current CCB themes and plugins and an expanding suite of GeoPlatform and 3rd-party plugins. Plugins were updated for general use by GeoPlatform CCB Communities.
Register Resource Plugin
This plugin allows authenticated users to quickly register external, web-accessible Dataset, Service, Map, Application, Website, and Topic resources to the GeoPlatform as Portfolio Assets.
This plugin was originally released in R15 and has been updated in R16 for compatibility with the latest versions and themes of WordPress.
Other significant updates include: a) more streamlined grouping of optional properties for Assets, b) link an Asset to Topic Assets (in addition to Theme Concepts and Communities), c) specify the preferred “access URL” in addition to a “landing page”, d) designate the resource (the “thing”) as a specialized type of Asset.
Asset Carousel Plugin
Enterprise Search 2.1We continue to tweak the search scoring algorithms to improve search performance for more relevant results. In this release the scoring is adjusted to weight higher items that have more occurrences of user-specified key-phrases.
Portfolio Management 2.1In R16, the Resource Performance Module (RPM) Dashboard makes its first public appearance! The RPM Dashboard 1.0 provides insights into performance and utilization of the Assets registered to the GeoPlatform. In addition to enhancements to Object Editor and the new Asset Details Plugin, there are a number of behind-the-scenes enhancements underway to streamline the harvesting and update of information about NGDA and other authoritative assets managed as the GeoPlatform Portfolio.
RPM Dashboard(https://dashboard.geoplatform.gov/rpm/#/dashboard) Another GeoPlatform “Performance Dashboard” designed to provide both high-level and detailed insight into the utilization of GeoPlatform and, more importantly, the utilization of GeoPlatform Portfolio Assets.
Some UI/UX tweaks and improvements for metadata ingest. A notable a new feature is now the ability to view/download the source metadata that was imported to the GeoPlatform and used to derive the corresponding Asset object. Not all Asset objects are derived from source metadata documents, but those that are, have an associated source metadata document that is maintained as a related resource.Other new UI tweaks include:
- prominent display of the resource “Issued Date” (which is also now an editable property),
- new placement of action buttons (including new “Quick Map” and “Clone Asset” actions), and
- quick access to (and edit of) the “Access URL” link – the promoted/preferred machine-ready way to access the resource (web-speak: to “resolve” the “thing”). Note this is distinct from the “Landing Page” URL which is intended as a link to information useful for human-consumption.
New in the previous R15 release was the capability to automatically version Asset objects when they have changed. As Objects of the GeoPlatform Registry are updated, they are versioned such that the changes made to the object over time are logged and can be viewed. This is an essential element of preserving authoritative information from producers while also curating GeoPlatform Portfolio Asset with enhanced, value-add information — information beyond what is captured in source metadata to include linkages to a host of other related resources, roles on those relationships, and knowledge graphs derived from concepts defined in controlled vocabularies. With object versioning, changes to Assets can be tracked, viewed, and adjudicated in workflows for curating the GeoPlatform Portfolio.Cloned Objects New in R16, is the ability to clone an object. In this way a “derivative” object can be created and augmented with value-add or mission-relevant information, for a specific purpose, community of interest or topic, without having modify the source “parent” object which may be deemed “authoritative” and otherwise not to be modified (and likely owned by another responsible party).
Earth Observation (EO) Module 1.0(https://eox.geoplatform.gov )
This is a “preview release” of a new capability of GeoPlatform that packages : a) the “EO Explorer” application for searching, browsing, and even ordering specifically for EO type products (generically, Datasets) and b) controlled vocabularies for searching and augmenting EO Products with semantically grounded terms. The EO Module was a pilot capability originally developed in 2018 with the support of GSA and NGA.The GeoPlatform EO Module is intended to deliver a single point of service for discovery of diverse and distributed EO Products across federal, state, local, tribal and commercial spaces, enabling users to:
- Find relevant EO Products
- Access relevant EO Products
- Identify gaps in availability of relevant EO Products
- Access other EO catalogs/holdings to order or acquire EO Products
- harvesting information (metadata) about EO Products provided by EO Product suppliers into the GeoPlatlform Portfolio,
- curating the portfolio of EO Products registered with the GeoPlatlform,
- exploring the GeoPlatform to find mission-relevant holdings and offerings,
- acting on selected EO Products to create and share value (information gained) with colleagues through cross-government collaborations.
- eoproducts – a GeoPlatform vocabulary for various kinds of common (and not so common) remotely sensed product types (e.g., EO multispectral imagery, EO full motion video (FMV) data, LIDAR Point Clouds and LIDAR 3-D Cloud data sets, etc.) as well as derived analytical products (e.g., Feature Extraction, Change Detection Services, Crowdsourced Data, etc).
